The County of San Diego will receive more than $1.9 million dollars from the federal stimulus package to help families on the brink of homelessness.
The funds will come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which has outlined specific requirements for how the money must be used:
- For short-term and medium-term rental assistance and services to prevent individuals and families who would otherwise be homeless without the aid.
- Sixty percent of the funds must be used within two years, and all of the funds must be used within three years.
The County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is responsible for distributing the Homeless Prevention Funds to communities within its jurisdiction. HCD’s jurisdiction includes the unincorporated areas of the county, and the cities of Coronado, Del Mar, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Poway and Solana Beach. The federal government has also awarded funds to local cities outside of HCD’s jurisdiction including the city of San Diego, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido and El Cajon.
