The San Diego County Library is motoring forward with its new East County Bookmobile.

Dianne Jacob, Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors, kicked off a recent dedication ceremony along with Fourth District Supervisor Ron Roberts, who is a regular bookmobile customer, and Library Director José Aponte.

The new vehicle features vibrant art on all four sides created by San Diego muralist John Whalen, of Wall-It Graphics in La Mesa. Among Whalen's designs is the landmark mural of Charles Lindbergh on the commuter terminal at San Diego International Airport.

“Just like the ice cream truck, the East County Bookmobile offers cool treats, only the County’s treats are the latest books, DVDs, music and more,” said Chairwoman Jacob who represents communities served by the new Bookmobile.

“Residents in rural communities truly appreciate the Bookmobile. Now, there’s more to appreciate,” Chairwoman Jacob said.

The East County Bookmobile measures 36 feet long— 10 feet longer than its predecessor— and has more than twice the capacity of the older vehicle. It will hold 7,400 items and will have computers and a printer for public use.

The mobile library will serve the already-established 15 sites throughout much of the unincorporated area of East County.

These include community centers, retirement residences, schools and other key points that have no County Library branch nearby, as well as the County Administration Center and students at the Monarch School, which provides an accredited education to homeless and at-risk children.

A second new bookmobile that will serve a large area of San Diego's North County also features art by Whalen.
