If you want to vote in the upcoming special statewide election in the comfort of your own home, you have a few days left to request a mail ballot. The deadline is Tuesday, May 12.

The statewide election is on May 19, which will decide six measures proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger and the legislature that would change the state budget process. Residents in Coronado will also vote to fill a city council vacancy.

You can download a mail ballot application, or send a request to the Registrar of Voters including your name, residence address, name and date of the election for which a ballot is requested, the address where the ballot is to be mailed and the your signature. The address is P.O. Box 85520, San Diego, CA 92186-5520. The fax is (858) 694-2955.

By state law, mail ballot applications must be physically received by the Registrar of Voters no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12. They cannot be simply postmarked on that date.

The mail ballot for this election is unique because it has been combined with the sample ballot. The sample ballot usually contains information about local candidates and measures, as well as polling locations. Since the special statewide election only involves state measures, and those who are registered as permanent mail voters do not need poll information, the Registrar of Voters sent a combined ballot to about 600,000 permanent mail ballot voters, saving about $225,000 in printing and mailing costs.

For more election information, contact the Registrar of Voters at (858) 565-5800 or visit www.sdvote.com.
