An estimated 3,000 gallon sewage spill occurred this morning on Waverly Avenue in La Jolla.
The spill entered a storm drain that empties into the ocean just north of the Bird Rock shoreline. Signs warning of sewage contaminated water have been posted at beach access points between Cortez Place and Bird Rock Avenue and will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.
The spill was reported at 8:00 AM and was contained at 8:40 AM by City of San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater Department crews. City crews recovered a portion of the spill. The cause of the spill is under investigation.
