The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man who beat a puppy at the border has increased to $6,500. That follows a $2,500 donation from the Humane Society of the United States Friday.
Spirit, a 10-week-old terrier mix, was rescued by the U.S. Border Patrol July 2 and turned over to the County Department of Animal Services. A veterinary specialist treated the dog this week for multiple fractures to her right hind leg, ribs and spine.
The puppy is doing well after surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, said Dawn Danielson, Director of the County Department of Animal Services. She said Spirit should be able to return to the shelter on Monday.
 Surveillance video obtained from the Border Patrol shows an unidentified male suspect striking the dog at least 10 times with his fist, as well as trying to strangle the puppy, and beating it against the border fence.
Anyone with information regarding the suspect seen in the video is asked to call Lt. Dan DeSousa at (619) 767-2624. If the suspect is found, the Department will pursue felony animal abuse charges.
The Department is also accepting donations to help with the cost of the puppy’s veterinary care. Donations can be sent to the Department of Animal Services at 5480 Gaines Street, San Diego, CA 92110. Donations can also be made by visiting the Animal Services Web site.
The puppy is not available for adoption at this time. Animal Services will notify the public when the puppy does become available for adoption.
