Students from the San Diego Sector of the United States Border Patrol Explorer Program will be visiting the County Department of Animal Services shelter at 5480 Gaines Street Thursday to donate money for the care of “Spirit,” the puppy brutally beaten at the border on July 2.
The puppy was rescued by a Border Patrol agent after the beating, which was caught on a video camera operated by the Border Patrol. The agent then turned the puppy over to an officer with the Department of Animal Services.
“We wish to thank the Explorers for their generosity,” said Dawn Danielson, Director of the Department of Animal Services. The Explorers are young people interested in pursuing a career with the Border Patrol.
“Their concern for the welfare of Spirit shows that, despite the horrific acts of one person, there are still many more people who truly care,” said Danielson.
Spirit sustained a fracture to her right rear leg and fractures to her ribs and spine from the beating caught on video on July 2. An examination at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital on July 10, also revealed older fractures which indicated that this was not the first beating the puppy endured. The old injuries were near the same area of the lower portion of her right rear leg.
Spirit is recovering from her injuries and, while the Department expects her to recover fully, her rehabilitation will be a lengthy and difficult process.
Animal Services is accepting donations to help cover the costs of veterinary care.
