The County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is offering parents who have had their driver license suspended for non-payment of child support an opportunity to get it restored.
The “Get Back on the Road Again” public awareness program targets parents who have had their license suspended because they did not meet their full child support obligations. The program is available to parents with child support cases in all California counties.
“August is Child Support Awareness Month, and we are using this time to educate people about our license suspension and reinstatement procedures,” said DCSS director Jeff Grissom.
“Noncustodial parents who may be having a tough time financially can work with our office to get their license reinstated, which may help them get back on their feet and provide the financial and medical support their children need.”
Evaluations of the noncustodial parent’s situation and the requirements for reinstating his or her driver’s license will be done on a case-by-case basis. However, some type of payment towards the current and past-due child support obligation is usually required.
Under a 1996 California law, noncustodial parents who do not pay their child support may have their driver license suspended until their payments are up-to-date. The law also impacts business and professional licenses issued by the state of California such as licenses held by doctors, lawyers, contractors and cosmetologists.
