An adoption event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30 for rabbits seized as a result of an investigation into animal cruelty.

The County Department of Animal Services confiscated 31 rabbits after Animal Control Officers found a variety of animals living in extremely unsanitary conditions in Mira Mesa. The majority of the rabbits were left to roam the house and had to eat food that other animals had defecated and urinated on.

Several of the rabbits were also pregnant and have since given birth, thus increasing the number of rabbits being held at the shelter.

The adoption event will be hosted by the Department of Animal Services in partnership with the San Diego House Rabbit Society from noon to 4 p.m. at the House Rabbit Society Adoption Center, 4805 Mercury St., Suite C in San Diego at the corner of Mercury Street and Ronson Road.

Adoption fees for rabbits are $25 and for two rabbits adopted together, the fee is only $35. Bunny supplies will be available for purchase at the event, which is cash or check only.

“People don’t realize what great companions rabbits can make. They are especially wonderful for apartments or condos because they virtually make no noise,” said Dawn Danielson, Director for the Department of Animal Services.

The County and the San Diego House Rabbit Society are working together to find these rabbits new homes and to educate adopters on the proper care of rabbits. All of the rabbits available for adoption are friendly, social pets that would make good family companions. The rabbits have all been spayed or neutered and are trained to use a litter box.
