The County Department of Animal Services announced today that adoption fees for dogs weighing 50 pounds or more will be waived during the month of October in celebration of “Adopt a Dog Month.”

“County shelters have a lot of great dogs and other pets available for adoption, but during 'Adopt a Dog Month,' we wanted to provide an added incentive to help place our large dogs that often have trouble competing for homes with puppies and smaller breeds,” said Dawn Danielson, Director of the County Department of Animal Services.

Adoption fees cover spaying or neutering, wellness and rabies vaccinations, microchip identification and a one-year free dog license for adopters who reside within the unincorporated areas of San Diego County or any city in which the Department provides animal control services.

Danielson said that currently the County’s three shelters have a high number of pets available for adoption, and that the Department is hopeful that these incentives will entice people looking to add a new family member to do it now before the holidays.

The County shelters are located at 5480 Gaines St. in San Diego; 5821 Sweetwater Rd. in Bonita; and 2481 Palomar Airport Rd. in Carlsbad.
