With the winter rainy season fast approaching, sand bags are once again being provided free of charge in unincorporated communities by the County Department of Public Works.

Residents are encouraged to get an early start to help prevent soil erosion on their property and to prevent blockage on public roadways and in storm drains.

Starting today, Oct. 17, bags and sand will be provided at strategic locations throughout the county, including four road stations and fire stations in Ramona, Fallbrook and Dulzura.

Locations include:

• 28205 N. Lake Wohlford Rd., Valley Center

• 16971 Hwy 76, Valley Center

• 1587 Hwy 78, Julian

• 1364 Tavern Road, Alpine

• Cal Fire, Mount Woodson Station, 16310 Highway 67, Ramona

• North County Fire Protection, Station Four, 4375 Pala Mesa Drive, Fallbrook

• Dulzura Fire Station, 17304 Highway 94, Dulzura

Each location has 4,000 bags and 10 cubic yards of sand and more will be provided if necessary. Residents are asked to provide their own shovels to load the free sand.

Heavy rains can cause severe erosion, especially where foliage has not fully recovered from previous fires. Storm water runoff and mud can block roadways and clog flood control systems and storm drains.

Residents are asked to protect their property, public infrastructure and the environment from storm water damage by taking advantage of this free program.
