Offenders sentenced to pick up trash through Probation’s Work Project program do more than just keep the roadsides clean – the bottles and cans they collect are used to raise money to benefit local charities during the holidays.
“This past year, work crews provided more than 1,300 hours to keep San Diego highways clean, which translates into almost $4000 to go toward worthy causes in our community,” said Mack Jenkins, Chief Probation Officer.
Donations were given to seven recipients:
- St. Vincent de Paul for 100 Thanksgiving meals
- Volunteers in Probation program for food baskets for selected probationer families
- Jackie Robinson YMCA for 30 backpacks with school supplies
- Becky’s House for gift cards for teens staying at the shelter
- Read San Diego program for books and training manuals used for literacy instruction
- Home Front San Diego to help military families
- Stuffed animals for the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive which benefits Rady Children’s Hospital (Video of Teddy Bear Drive)
- Fresh Start Surgical Gifts for surgery for a child born with a physical deformity
