An estimated 180,000-gallon sewage spill occurred this morning at Haymar Drive in Oceanside.   The spill, which was caused by a broken pipe, started at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 11:00 a.m. when crews from the City of Oceanside Wastewater Department capped the pipe.

None of the sewage was recovered so an estimated 180,000 gallons of sewage flowed into Buena Vista Creek that leads to the Buena Vista Lagoon and ultimately the Pacific Ocean.  Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted 1,000 feet north and south at the Lagoon outlet and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
