Animal Control Officers from the County Department of Animal Services took custody of eight horses that were part of the group of horses that galloped through the East Lake community of Chula Vista. The horses are being housed at the County animal shelter at 5821 Sweetwater Road in Bonita.
Several of the horses have injuries ranging from minor to moderate. They have been examined by Dr. Carlisle Rand of the East County Large Animal Practice and will receive treatment as needed. Most of the horses are showing symptoms of lameness and one had lacerations on its hind leg.
“The mare and foal had a happy reunion and are being kept together,” said John Carlson, Deputy Director of Animal Services. “These horses are not wild. All of them are easily handled now after they were given some time to relax after their frightening experience, which indicates they are comfortable with human contact.”
Animal Services is looking for the owners of these horses. If you know the owners or have any information, please call County Animal Services at (619) 498-2305 so the horses can be reunited.
If the owners cannot be located, the horses will be made available for adoption to qualified individuals after the required holding period and medical problems have been resolved or stabilized.
Animal Services Deputy Director John Carlson would like to extend thanks to Border Patrol, the San Diego Humane Society and private individuals who helped round up the horses to keep them safe.
