The San Diego County Probation Department is opening the doors of Juvenile Hall on Saturday, May 22, 2010 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the annual open house. Public tours begin every five minutes and last up to an hour. No reservations are necessary. Juvenile Hall is located at 2801 Meadow Lark Drive in San Diego.
Juvenile Hall Open House is long standing tradition at the 57-year-old facility, hosting an average of 3,000 visitors each year. Young people learn about the consequences of risky behavior, and see firsthand what daily life is like for detainees – what clothes they wear, what they eat, and where they sleep.
“Juvenile Hall Open House allows us to show the public how probation officers keep the community safe through holding youth accountable and helping them make changes in their lives,” said Chief Probation Officer Mack Jenkins.
The tour also includes a visit to Juvenile Court where visitors learn about the juvenile justice system and the Girls Rehabilitation Facility. The facility houses up to 50 girls participating in a four-month treatment program for a variety of delinquency issues.
In addition, the event includes dozens of booths staffed by probation officers and community-based organizations with information to help young people overcome negative behavior and find positive activities.
