If you have an older relative on your holiday shopping list, perhaps this is the year to look past traditional gifts such as robes, socks, perfume or candy and consider a more tech-savvy gift such as an e-book reader, a gaming system or even computer classes.
Don’t count out seniors when you’re thinking about technology gifts. The Technology & Aging Coalition of San Diego County offers gift ideas for people puzzled about what might be useful or even just plain fun for their parents and grandparents. The coalition has a web site – AgeTechSD.org – that provides a variety of gift suggestions in various price ranges. (These are just suggestions for gifts and none of the products are endorsed by the County).
The Technology & Aging Coalition emerged from the County’s Aging Summit on Technology this summer. The goal of the group is to encourage older adults to explore the many technology products and services available. The coalition is working to increase technology education and encouraging technology developers to create products with older adults in mind.
The coalition’s steering committee includes representatives from the San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency, the San Diego Futures Foundation, AARP, Access to Independence, San Diego County Continuing Education and Aldea Communications, a consulting business on technology products for older adults.
