Today Raul Leyva, 35, pleaded guilty to five felony counts of owning and training dogs for fighting with other dogs.

“With this plea today, the Department of Animal Services has ensured that Raul Leyva will not harm another dog for a very long time,” said Dawn Danielson, Director of the County’s Department of Animal Services. “It should also serve as a warning to people engaged in animal fighting that the Department will fully investigate every complaint and, with the help of the prosecutors, hold those people accountable for their actions.”

Animal Control Officers executed a Search Warrant at the Leyva property located at 2231 Boundary Avenue in Ramona in May of 2008. The officers seized a total of 10 pit bulls as well as other evidence of dog fighting from the property.

Leyva’s sentencing is scheduled for November 23 at the El Cajon Courthouse.
