An estimated 4,600 gallon sewage spill occurred this morning at 2017 North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. The spill was due to an air vac malfunction. The spill started at 8:26 AM and ended at 8:49 AM when crews from the Leucadia Wastewater District fixed the air vac. Approximately 150 gallons of the sewage was recovered. The remainder flowed into Batiquitos Lagoon.
Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted at Carlsbad State Beach access points from 1000 feet north and south of Batiquitos Lagoon Outlet. The water contact closure will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
