The beaches listed below are closed due to suspected sewage contamination. Signs warning of sewage contamination will be posted. As a result of the power outage, an estimated 3.2 million gallons of sewage spilled from the San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater System, Pump Station #64, located at 10745 Roselle St, San Diego into the Los Penasquitos Lagoon. The spill was discovered at 5:50 p.m. on 9/8/11 and at this time is continuing. City of San Diego crews are working to control the release. As a result, all beaches north of Scripps Pier through Del Mar and Solana Beach will have signs warning of contamination posted at major beach access points.
An additional sewage spill occurred at Pump Station #1 near the I-5 and Hwy 54 resulting in a release of an estimated 120,000 gallons. This spill flowed into the Sweetwater River which flows into the San Diego Bay. Signs warning of contamination will be posted at Bayside Park in Chula Vista and the San Diego Bay area accessed from Silver Strand.
