If you’re looking for a family-friendly place to play and learn, you can’t beat Stelzer County Park, with its award-winning educational programs, well-maintained hiking trails and shaded playgrounds.
That’s the verdict of parents, who named the Lakeside Park the 2009 Best Family Park in all of San Diego County by Nickelodeon’s Parents’ Pick Awards.
“It’s always an honor when any of our wonderful facilities gets recognized but this offers a great sense of achievement,” said Brian Albright, Director of the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department.
“The nominees and the winners are selected solely by parents, who are our direct customers, so this speaks volumes about the service we aim to provide.”
The Nickelodeon’s Parents Pick Awards is a national awards program that allows parents to pick the best family friendly facilities. Throughout the year, parents rate their favorite venue using a star system. The businesses with the highest ratings are nominated and parents select the winner.
Stelzer Park offers hiking trails, picnic tables and fire-safe barbecue grills set amid 310 acres of coastal sage scrub and oak woodlands. Families can enjoy a day filled with recreational activities such as biking, picnicking or bird watching.
One of the main attractions is the popular Discovery Kit program, which is designed to educate kids about nature and the environment. Elementary school children throughout the county receive hands-on learning experiences to encourage them to explore and appreciate nature. The kids get education in the classroom, followed by an outdoor adventure in the park, and completed with additional classroom and take-home activities.
Stelzer Park is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to sunset.
