On January 17, the Department of Public Works' (DPW) Watershed Protection Program and UC Cooperative Extension’s “Healthy Garden-Healthy Home” program was awarded the 2007 Integrated Pest Management Innovator Award from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
The award ceremony, which was held in Sacramento, honored California organizations that emphasize pest prevention and favor least-hazardous pest control, and allowed for organizations to share their successful strategies with others. The “Healthy Garden-Healthy Home” program is an element of the County’s outreach and education for the Project Clean Water Program.
The award-winning program is a partnership between DPW’s Watershed Protection Program and the UC Cooperative Extension. Watershed Protection staff has been working with the UC Cooperative Extension to increase awareness about the harmful effects of pesticide pollution in receiving waters, encourage proper use and disposal of pesticides among residential users and provide regionally consistent Integrated Pest Management education that can lead to the adoption of positive behaviors.
