The County Library’s L.E.A.R.N./Laubach ESL Program is one of 18 programs selected by the National Association of Counties (NACo) as a recipient of a 2008 Acts of Caring Awards. Acts of Caring Awards recognize the top county volunteer programs in the country. The award ceremony will be held April 10 on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
The program is a partnership between the Library’s adult literacy program, L.E.A.R.N. (Libraries Empower All to Read Now), and the Laubach Literacy Council of San Diego County. Through this partnership, volunteer tutors are trained to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to adult immigrants and non-English speakers in the County Library branches. By the end of its first year, 25 volunteer tutors were teaching 76 students at 6 library branches. Classes have been added at the branches in Casa de Oro and San Marcos, with an additional class scheduled to begin in April at the Encinitas branch.
