On May 29, the Office of Emergency Services (OES) received the San Diego Taxpayers Association’s Golden Watchdog Award. The award was bestowed upon OES for AlertSanDiego, the County’s mass notification system.
The AlertSanDiego system was instrumental in evacuating over 515,000 residents during the October wildfires by issuing automated phone messages, which let residents in the fire’s path know that they needed to evacuate.
Not only did AlertSanDiego save many lives, it saved tax dollars as well by offering a sophisticated next-generation system at a fraction of the price of other mass notification systems on the market.
AlertSanDiego allows residents to register their cell phones online to receive information during an emergency, eliminating overhead expenses of servers, phones and maintenance. Those wishing to register their cell phone can do so at www.readysandiego.org.
