By County of San Diego Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H.
As the outbreak of novel Influenza A H1N1 virus continues globally, nationally, and locally, the Health and Human Agency will continue to keep the community informed on a daily basis of the latest laboratory confirmed cases.
To date, San Diego has reported more case in California than any other county in the state. As seen in the U.S. and other countries, San Diego cases have been associated with mild symptoms associated, and generating only a small percentage of hospitalizations. Thankfully, there have been no deaths in San Diego County. Keep in mind that little is still known about this novel virus. As more information is gathered, public health officials will be able to take appropriate actions and modify previous actions.
At this time, the new virus is common in the San Diego community. There are essential actions that the general public should take to achieve the goal of reducing spread and severity of illness. As such, this can be done by the following actions:
- Stay home when sick
- Conduct good cough etiquette (cover your cough with sleeve or tissue)
- Wash hand properly and frequently
- See a doctor if serious illness develops
The community is reliant on the local healthcare community to:
- Implement appropriate infection control measures
- Identify ill individuals early
- Treat serious illness
- Prioritize testing to hospitalized or high-risk groups
- Prioritize antiviral medications use to treat severe illness and people at high risk of serious influenza-related conditions
Lastly, local public health officials are committed to conducting surveillance, performing contact investigations, enhancing testing efficiency, and serving as a resource.
Everyone has a role to play. Ongoing evaluation of response efforts will serve to contribute to public health's duty to plan, prepare and protect!
