I would like to provide information about H1N1 flu for those who work, live or have family in a long-term care facility.
H1N1 flu cases have been reported in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and convalescent hospitals. Flu is usually spread in these types of settings by contact with infected staff or visitors, so prevention is critical.
- Staff should not come to work when sick.
- Visitors should also not go to the facility when sick.
- Staff and residents should be vaccinated against seasonal influenza; however this only protects you against seasonal flu.
- All staff, visitors and residents should cover their cough or sneeze with their arm or a tissue, and wash their hands often with warm water and soap.
We are asking care facilities to be prepared by reviewing their pandemic influenza plan and reporting any increase in respiratory illness in residents and staff.
Please know that your health is our priority, and we are working closely with state and federal health officials to continue monitoring the H1N1 flu to mitigate its spread.
