Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Integrated pest management includes identifying cultural and environmental controls in addition to pesticides and other chemicals to control pests.

Bait Information

The Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures manufacturers a rodent bait for rats, squirrels and mice.

The bait is a diphacinone (anticoagulant) rodent bait sold at cost. It is available for purchase from our Main Office in Kearny Mesa or our North County office in San Marcos.

The cost is $2.50/lb plus tax, with a minimum 2lb purchase.

Purchases of more than 15lbs require the approval of a pesticide regulation inspector.

New handouts were developed this year to provide endangered species information to purchasers of the bait. The handouts describe where species may be at risk from rodenticides, and how to use bait in a manner that reduces the risk. The species potentially affected are the Stephen’s Kangaroo Rat, the Pacific Pocket Mouse, and the Belding’s Savannah Sparrow.

We do not offer services to the public for the control of rats or other pests. Please contact Vector Control in the County Department of Environmental Health for help with rats.
