New State Requirements Could Affect Agriculture, Weights and Measures

Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AWM) could be responsible for inspecting all commercial agricultural locations in unincorporated parts of the county, under a change to the Regional Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Permit water requirements. The change would increase the department’s inspection inventory eightfold. AWM inspects nurseries, greenhouses, golf courses, cemeteries and pest control businesses throughout the county’s unincorporated areas to ensure compliance with the requirements. The permit is reissued every five years by the Regional Water Quality Control Board and is currently in the public comment period. The draft permit, as currently written, would require the changes. AWM is preparing and will be ready to meet the challenge should this new requirement take effect when the next permit is issued.
