Freeze Damage Information

Estimated agricultural losses in San Diego County totaled over $114 million due to freezing temperatures January 13 through 24, 2007.

The cold affected growers throughout the county causing a variety of losses, but predominantly caused a loss of fruit. Substantial crop losses (greater than 30%) occurred to grapefruits, guavas, lemons, limes and wax flowers. Other commodities that suffered losses included herbs, avocados, oranges and nursery products. Cut flowers were severely impacted by the freeze causing many growers to miss the Valentine?s Day season.

These estimates are based on this year?s projected crop losses and do not include other costs such as next season's crop reduction due to bloom loss, and plant restoration and/or replacement. It also does not include the cost of mitigation measures and additional energy and labor costs.
