Nearly 150 Attend Senior Health Fair in Escondido
Event Offered Fitness Demos, Health Screenings, Expert-led Discussion Forums

ESCONDIDO – Nearly 150 seniors attended the Healthy Senior Living fair in Escondido at the Joslyn Senior Center on Thursday, hosted by county Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and the county’s Aging & Independence Services (AIS).

Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and Escondido City Councilman Ed Gallo spoke with a resident at the Healthy Senior Living fair on April 17 at the Joslyn Senior Center. The most popular offerings at the event were the antioxidant screenings, Silver Age Yoga demonstrations and bone density scans.
The event, supported by the City of Escondido, kicked off the supervisor’s year-long campaign to focus on health issues throughout the Third District.

“Getting on in years isn’t what it used to be – and that’s a good thing,” Slater-Price said. “Seniors are living fuller, longer and healthier lives because we now recognize that we can remain youthful with the proper nutrition and overall wellbeing.”

Attendees were provided a wide variety of information, including three expert-led discussion forums on Senior Safety, Lifelong Learning and Healthy Aging. Discussion participants learned about elder fraud and abuse, mastering the Internet or retraining for work, and the keys to remaining youthful throughout life, and much more.

Health experts also offered numerous health screenings, senior yoga demonstrations and a special feature – a Meet the Pharmacist component, which allowed folks to have their medications assessed for any possible negative interactions.

“One major goal for our department is to educate older adults and their families about healthy lifestyle choices, about vital aging,” said Pam Smith, Director of the county’s Aging & Independence Services. “We appreciate Supervisor Slater-Price’s continuing commitment to the wellbeing of seniors and providing us an opportunity to talk more about the importance of exercise, medication management, nutrition and seeking meaning and purpose in life.”

As special thanks, the first 100 seniors who visited the North County Transit District table received free day-passes for the Sprinter and Breeze. Submarina lunches were provided courtesy of Palomar Pomerado Health.
