READY, SET, MOW!
SAN DIEGO - Moving to reduce the environmental impacts of gas-powered
lawn mowers, Supervisor Ron
Roberts, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District and the
California Air Resources Board will co-
sponsor a lawn mower trade-in event on June 2, 2001 where county residents
can trade in their gas mower
and receive a cleaner battery-powered rechargeable mower at a substantially
reduced price.
According to the California Air Resources Board, the pollution caused
by an average gas mower is equal to that
of 40 cars on an hour-for-hour basis, and operating a gas mower for
one hour produces as much pollution as
driving your new car 340 miles.
The event begins at 8 am in the north parking lot of the County Administration
Center, 1600 Pacific Highway, and will last until all 500 mowers are
distributed. Under the program, upon trading in their gas mower, county
residents will receive a voucher good for a $220 discount off the purchase
of a $370 Black & Decker CMM1000 battery-powered mower, reducing
the total cost to $150, including tax. Even with the high cost of electricity,
the cost to charge this mower is about 65 cents per month.
The Black & Decker CMM1000 is a top-of-the-line mower featuring
-
A 24-volt battery with torque equivalent to a 5-horsepower
gas mower ( and no cord!)
-
Mulching or rear bag collection
-
Overnight recharging, at off-peak energy use times,
using an electrical outlet for 1.5 hours of cutting
-
One-button start-up and quiet operation
-
Simple, single lever adjustment to set cutting height
-
No need for oil or spark plug changes or tune-ups
-
Low energy use. For a traditional cutting season (with
the mower charging overnight when not cutting) the total cost would
be less than $10 per year.
-
Participants must show a valid California ID as proof
of San Diego County residency. Cash, check, Visa or Mastercard will
be accepted.
