HAVE A BALL THIS SUMMER WITH COUNTYS CRITICAL
HOURS
No-cost youth programs open throughout the region
Local children can spend their summer learning to surf, play an instrument,
getting martial arts
training, and more, through the San Diego County Critical Hours program.
Critical Hours, started in 1997 by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors
as an after-school program,
is offered at 46 locations throughout the county. The program is open
to middle school age youth for no
charge, and in the afternoon during the summer months.
Statistics show that juvenile crime increases more than 100 percent
during after-school hours, said San Diego County Board of Supervisors
Chairman Ron Roberts, who initiated Critical Hours with Supervisor Greg
Cox. When kids have nothing to do, they often get into trouble.
Critical Hours provides a place where they can meet with other youth,
get help with homework, or participate in a wide array of activities.
"The County created Critical Hours to enrich young lives and provide
exciting opportunities to learn and grow," said Supervisor Greg
Cox. "I encourage all families to take advantage of Critical Hours
programs this summer."
The sites have varying summer hours and are located at middle schools,
Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs and recreation centers. More than 41,000
youth have participated in the program since its inception.
