San Diego Gears Up to Mow Down Polution

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 29, 2003

The County of San Diego’s Fourth Annual Lawnmower Trade-In Event will take place on Saturday, May 17th in the north parking lot at the County Administration Center.

Here’s how it works: if you trade in your gasoline powered mower (it must be in working condition) you will be able to purchase a Black & Decker CMM1000 lawnmower (it retails for about $450) for only $150 including tax. Participants must bring photo identification proving they are a resident of San Diego County.

What time should you arrive? The event begins at 8:00 am, but if years’ past are any indication, if you show up then it will likely be too late. By 8:00 am last year, the event was already sold out – more than 600 people were already in line to snatch up the 600 mowers that were made available. This year, there are 400 mowers available, so you might want to arrive around 6:00 a.m.

Supervisor Roberts started the Lawnmower Trade-In Event in 2000 as a way to get high polluting, gas-powered mowers out of circulation. According to the California Air Resources Board, the average gas mower emits the same amount of pollution as do 40 cars on an hour-for-hour basis.
