San Diego - County Fifth District Supervisor Bill Horn announced today that the Board of Supervisors approved to accept a matching grant for improvements to the Borrego Valley Airport and Gillespie Field. Borrego Valley Airport will receive a new slurry seal on the runway and taxiways and an automated weather observation system (AWOS).
"The new AWOS will provide a centralized weather monitoring system for the Borrego Valley Airport," stated Supervisor Bill Horn. "Critical information will then be integrated and disseminated utilizing real-time data so pilots can be alerted automatically to changes in weather information."
The improvements to Borrego Valley Airport are scheduled to begin in April 2000 and construction is to be completed in September 2000. The County will pay $121,000 for the improvements and the federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) will provide $471,000 in the matching grant.
"These improvements are to accommodate the planes, jets and charters now utilizing Borrego Valley Airport," concluded Supervisor Bill Horn. "The improvements will mean safer approaches and takeoffs due to a smoother runway and the new automated weather system."
