April 11, 2000

San Diego - San Diego County Fifth District Supervisor Bill Horn announced today that the County Board of Supervisors approved a funding package for the San Pasqual Academy. The Academy located near the Wild Animal Park will serve as a long-term solution that will expand the County’s placement options for foster care youths.

"San Pasqual Academy will provide a stable learning environment for children who have found themselves in and out of several foster homes," stated Supervisor Bill Horn. "This campus located in my District, will help prepare these youths who are on their way to becoming responsible adults."

The funding package brought forward by Supervisors Ron Roberts and Greg Cox was approved with a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors. The project will cost $15 million to acquire the 238 acres and $9 million to renovate the campus.

On March 14, 2000 the Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisor Horn to mark proceeds from the sale of Deer Park in upwards of $2.5 million for San Pasqual Academy. Today during the Board Meeting Metabolife founder Mike Ellis donated $5 million to the project further reducing the County’s financial burden.
