Clairemont
Skate Park Now Open!
Heralded as the best all-around skatepark
in America by top professional skateboarder
Andy McDonald, the new Krause Family Skatepark
in Clairemont opened to the public on Saturday
August 10, 2002.
The 53,000 square-foot skaters wonderland is a
collaborative effort between the Clairemont Town Council,
the Mission Valley YMCA, the San Diego Unified School
District, and Supervisor Ron Roberts, who secured $200,000
in county funding for the project.
Located at 3401 Clairemont Drive, the skatepark, which is the largest
in San Diego County, includes an in-ground pool with three different
elevations, a 13-foot half pipe, an area for bicyclists and in-line
skaters, a street course and a beginners area.
This is big-time, said Roberts, who spoke at the parks
dedication. Skateboarding is one of the fastest growing sports
in the country, and we need to do whatever we can to encourage more
kids and adults to take up this popular activity.
The Jim and Gail Krause family and the Mission Valley YMCA also provided
funding to build the $400,000 skatepark.
The project is the brainchild of Clairemont residents Billy Paul, Dave
Konstantin and Glen Schmidt. Ground was broken on the park in January
2002.
