RE: PRESENTATION OF AWARDS BY THE CALIFORNIA STATE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES (CSAC)

SUMMARY:
The California State Association of Counties (CSAC) recently recognized the County of San Diego with its Challenge Award for the Reserve Deputy Probation Officer Program and the Managed Competition-Vehicle maintenance Program. These two programs were recognized for being some of the most innovative in the State. Today, we welcome members of the CSAC to present the awards to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

Recommendation:
CHAIRWOMAN DIANNE JACOB

Accept the presentation of two Challenge Awards by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC).

Fiscal Impact:
This request will result in no additional costs or staff years.

BACKGROUND:
In 1998, San Diego County received seven awards from the California State Association of Counties (CSAC), two Challenge and five Merit Awards. In what seems to be a new and refreshing tradition for the County, today the Board is being asked to accept two 1999 Challenge Awards from the CSAC for the Reserve Deputy Probation Officer Program and the Managed Competition-Vehicle maintenance Program.

CSAC, in an attempt to recognize the efforts of the many counties throughout the State, established the Challenge Awards to recognize the innovation, creativity and hard work found on a daily basis in California's 58 counties. This year CSAC received 176 entries from 36 counties, surpassing previous totals. The quality and innovation of the entries reflects the efforts of California's counties to continuously serve their constituents more efficiently and cost-effectively. Out of the 176 entries, 12 Challenge Awards were presented in 1999 and San Diego County received two of the awards. Along with the two 1999 Challenge Awards, it should be noted that the County was also awarded two Merit Awards out of 20 entries.

Today, we welcome Mr. Steven Szalay, Executive Director for CSAC, for his presentation of the Challenge Awards to the Board of Supervisors.

Respectfully Submitted,

DIANNE JACOB
Chairwoman
