Subject: Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus - Site Search

Summary:
Since October of 1999, the community of Ramona has been working on the concept of an intergenerational community campus. On July 15, 2000 (12), the Board directed staff to conduct an analysis of a community proposal that included a private sector partnership. Today's item requests that the Chief Administrative Officer work with the Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus Steering Committee to locate alternative sites for an intergenerational campus that will accommodate a new library and senior center as well as future facilities.

RECOMMENDATION:
SUPERVISOR JACOB:

Direct the Chief Administrative Officer to work with the Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus Steering Committee to identify an acceptable site, between 3 and 20 acres, that will accommodate a new community library and senior center as well as future facilities and to return to the Board with alternatives within 60 days.

Fiscal Impact:

Funding for this action is budgeted and appropriated in the 2000-2001 budget. This action requires no additional staff years.

Background:

Last January, in my State of the County Address, I set as a priority the need to create more opportunities to link seniors with children in our communities under the premise that both youth and seniors can learn from each other.

The community of Ramona, based on that premise and the success of the Ramona "Bridging the Gap" intergenerational mentoring program, presented a public/private partnership that would create an intergenerational community campus in Ramona. On July 15, 2000, the Board directed staff to conduct an analysis of that community proposal. At a recent meeting the Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus Steering Committee, with representatives from the senior center, library, Head Start, Boys & Girls Club, revitalization group and health organizations, requested that the County of San Diego now assume the lead development role for this project.

Today's item request that the Chief Administrative Officer work with the Ramona Intergenerational Community Steering Committee to locate alternative sites for an intergenerational campus to accommodate a new library and senior center as well as future facilities.

Developing a single location for services that affect seniors, youths as well as others is not only good business but also good for our citizens.

I urge your support.

Sincerely,

DIANNE JACOB
