SUBJECT: DESIGNATING THE COMMUNITY OF JACUMBA AS A COLONIA
SUMMARY:
Overview
The Jacumba Community Services District requests that the County
designate the community as a colonia to help acquire grants for
infrastructure improvement from the United States Department of Agriculture.
Recommendation
SUPERVISOR DIANNE JACOB:
- Adopt the resolution
entitled: A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF THE COUNTY OF
SAN DIEGO GRANTING JACUMBA COLONIA DESIGNATION.
BACKGROUND:
Jacumba,
California is a community located in southeastern San Diego County approximately
75 miles east of the city of San Diego. While the current population is
approximately 400, this quiet high desert retreat was once a thriving
spa. In the 1920's and 30's the community thrived, with its theraputic
hot springs it was a mecca for Hollywood celebrities and wealthy Imperial
Valley growers.
The Jacumba Community
Services District intends to upgrade and improve its water system to serve
the existing community. In a recent needs assessment, the Jacumba Community
Services District found deficiencies in water flow that could jeopardize
public health and safety in the case of a fire in the community. The United
States Department of Agriculture will fund nearly all of the improvements
if Jacumba is designated as a colonia.
Jacumba's unique location
and community circumstances will qualify the community for federal funding
important to the public health, safety and welfare.
I urge your support.
Respectfully submitted,
DIANNE JACOB
Supervisor, Second District
