SUBJECT: Establishing a San Diego Chargers Stadium Sub-committee

SUMMARY:
Today’s action will establish a Board of Supervisors ad hoc sub-committee that will act as the Board’s point of contact for any inquiries or information requests from the San Diego Chargers or from any other interested party regarding the search for a suitable location within San Diego County to site a new football stadium. Today’s action will also appoint two Supervisors to the newly created Chargers Stadium Sub-Committee.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Vice Chairman Roberts and Supervisor Dianne Jacob:

  1. Establish a Board of Supervisors Chargers Stadium Sub-Committee.
  2. Appoint Vice Chairman Roberts and Supervisor Jacob to the Chargers Stadium Sub-Committee.

FISCAL IMPACT:
There are no fiscal impacts associated with this recommendation.

BACKGROUND:
On May 1, 2006 the San Diego City Council voted to amend their lease with the San Diego Chargers football franchise to allow team representatives to meet with jurisdictions outside the City of San Diego, but within San Diego County, about the possibility of placing a new football stadium somewhere beside the current location in Mission Valley.

Ever since the San Diego Chargers first began playing football in San Diego in 1961, the team has become part of the civic pride of the entire region. While questions have been raised over the last several years about the need, location and cost of a new football stadium for the San Diego Chargers, the importance to the region of keeping the San Diego Chargers in the County has never been questioned.

Based on several media reports, the County of San Diego will likely be contacted by the San Diego Chargers as soon as the amendments to their lease with the City of San Diego become final. With that in mind, today’s action will establish a Board of Supervisors ad hoc sub committee that will act as the Board’s point of contact for any inquiries or information requests from the San Diego Chargers or from any other interested party regarding the search for a suitable location within San Diego County to site a new football stadium. Today’s action will also appoint Vice Chairman Roberts and Supervisor Jacob to the Board’s Chargers Stadium Sub-Committee.

The Board’s establishment of a Chargers Stadium Sub-Committee does not commit the County of San Diego to use any public dollars or public asset to help find a location for new football stadium for the Chargers nor does it commit the County to participate financially in the construction of a stadium. The sub-committee’s sole purpose will be to act as the point of contact for the Board on the football stadium issue and to report back to the entire Board of Supervisors, if necessary, on any relevant inquiry or proposal.
We urge your support!
