SUBJECT: Support for Increased Water Conservation through Improved Irrigation
SUMMARY:
Overview
Several organizations in East County have demonstrated a need for improvements to their community and/or recreational facilities, and have shown that they are prepared to work together with other jurisdictions and community members to provide these opportunities. This action will allocate funds to The Water Conservation Garden for costs associated with the construction of their new irrigation exhibit.
Recommendations:
SUPERVISOR DIANNE JACOB:
- Allocate $8,000 from the District Two Community Project Fund to The Water Conservation Garden Authority for reimbursement of outstanding costs related to constructing the new irrigation exhibit.
- Authorize the Chief Financial Officer to execute a grant agreement with the Water Conservation Garden Authority establishing the terms for receipt of the funds described above.
- Find that this grant award has a public purpose.
Fiscal Impact
The fiscal impact of this recommendation is $8,000. The funding source is FY 07-08 District Two Community Projects. This action will result in the addition of no new staff years and no future costs.
BACKGROUND:
2007 has been a historically dry year for San Diego County. In addition, a recent federal court ruling restricted pump operations from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
This restriction affects the water supply for Southern California, including the residents of our County. The recent fire storm that swept the region serves as yet another reminder that it is becoming increasingly important to conserve water and take whatever safety measures we can to prepare for the water shortage and also stay fire-wise. The most effective means of saving water is found to be through outdoor conservation.
To bring awareness to the importance of irrigation and teach visitors how to save water in their landscapes, the Water Conservation Garden Authority just unveiled a new Irrigation Exhibit. This display garden will provide easy-to-understand information about the irrigation options that are available. Today’s allocation of $8,000 from the District Two Community Project Fund to the Water Conservation Garden Authority will reimburse the Garden for outstanding costs associated with constructing the exhibit.
Respectfully submitted,
DIANNE JACOB
