Gary comes to District Four with a lengthy resume of service in the political arena as well as in
the non-profit sector. He has served at the state and city levels, acting as the Deputy Director of
the Office of the Governor in San Diego. Most recently, Gary specialized in transportation issues
with Caltrans in several capacities including as the Assistant Deputy District Director for Legislation
and as an Associate Transportation Planner. In his work at Caltrans, Gary was part of the Native American
Liaison Team for which he developed the Tribal Governments Transportation Needs Assessment. As a
part of the Goods Movement branch, Gary was responsible for the Border Book, the compendium of all Caltrans
border related projects.
Gary
currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Supervisor Ron
Roberts. In that capacity, he coordinates policy development and
the preparation of the Board of Supervisors meeting agendas. Gary
specializes in transportation and transit, air quality, and veteran’s
issues. He is also the Supervisor’s liaison to University City,
Hillcrest and Kearny Mesa. Additionally, Gary assists the Chief
of Staff on media relations and speechwriting.
Gary is
a fixture in the local Jewish community, serving for four years as the
Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee and leading its
educational seminar in Israel in 1999. He is also a past chair of
the AIPAC Young Leadership program.
Gary is
often seen out on the soccer fields in University City as he serves as
a board member of Mesa Soccer and a coach in the recreational
program. He is also the founding president of the Lions Athletics
Booster Club at the San Diego Jewish Academy.
Gary
and his daughter reside in Serra Mesa, where he served as chair of the
Serra Mesa Planning Committee. He is a member of the Serra Mesa
Community Council and the Friends of the Serra Mesa Library.
He
has an MSW from the University of Southern California, and MA from
Hebrew Union College and a BSW from the University of Texas. As someone
who truly bleeds orange, Gary serves on the “Texas Execs” of San Diego
Board of Directors, the official alumni association of UT.
