30" X 36" Dated 8/06/36 Labeled "Picture #31, Project #2324" Depicts five cows and a man in a field. Born in Ohio in 1854, Charles Fries spent his life primarily as a painter and lithographer. He studied lithography and portraiture in Cincinnati, and working from a studio, he traveled and sketched throughout the Southwest. He later moved his studio to NYC and enjoyed success as an illustrator and portraitist. In 1896, he and his family headed west and upon arriving in Southern California, temporarily lived in the ruins of the un-restored mission at San Juan Capistrano. The family eventually settled in San Diego, where he remained active in the art world until his death in 1940.
