Bridging the Centuries: The Jewel on the Bay

Bridging the Centuries: The Jewel on the Bay documents the history of the San Diego County Administration Center. From San Diego's pre-war dreams of the early 1900's to the celebration of opportunity in the midst of the Great Depression, Bridging the Centuries chronicles the legacy of the historic San Diego County Administration Center.

Beginning in 1902, San Diego’s civic leaders crossed many hurdles before construction could begin on this public building. Bridging the Centuries examines its history and gives us a glimpse into the region at that time. It also commemorates the many San Diegans who held to their vision and overcame numerous obstacles in bringing this grand building to reality. This building’s legacy began in 1938 with its dedication by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (watch a video about the dedication and the building). The County Administration Center stands as a testament to the strength, vitality, diversity, livability and beauty of this region.

In 2012, a second edition of Bridging the Centuries: The Jewel on the Bay was published to update the history of the County Administration Center through the major historical renovation, as well as the significant capital improvements from 1998 - 2012 that have ensured the preservation of this important structure.

There are two ways to read the Second Edition of Bridging the Centuries: The Jewel on the Bay, published in 2012:
