New Passport Laws Affect Parents Who Owe Child Support

Recent Federal legislation will take effect during 2009 whereby U.S. citizens who wish to travel to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean or Bermuda by land or sea will need a passport. Parents who have an active case through a local child support agency and owe more than $2,500 in back payments, will be denied issuance or renewal of a passport.

If you are faced with this situation and have an active case with the County of San Diego Department of Child Support Services, take steps to take care of this now. Currently, there are lengthy delays in obtaining passports. You are encouraged to contact our office as soon as possible to review options to clear your arrears and allow you to obtain a passport. Please call us to speak with a caseworker at 619-236-7600 or send an Email through the “Contact Us” option on this web site.
