Helicopter Applying Mosquito Larvicides

In order to better protect communities and the environment, the Vector Control Program conducts aerial applications of mosquito larvicides to verified mosquito breeding habitats that are too large or too sensitive to be treated by hand. These treatments occur every 3 – 4 weeks during the mosquito breeding season, typically between April and October.

The larvicides used by the Vector Control Program act specifically on mosquito larvae and will not harm other wildlife. The larvicide used is called VectoMax, which is a mixture of Bacillus sphaericus and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. It is applied by a helicopter every three to four weeks. The larvicide listed above is made from bacteria that only affect mosquito larvae. The bacteria kill the larvae before they can develop into biting adults.
