Helicopter Applying Mosquito Larvicides

The Vector Control Program has been conducting monthly aerial mosquito larvicide applications to difficult-to-access areas that are known for mosquito breeding.

The larvicides used by the Vector Control Program act specifically on mosquito larvae and will not harm other wildlife. The larvicide used is called VectoMax, which is a mixture of Bacillus sphaericus and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis. It is applied by a helicopter every three to four weeks to the vegetation in the water bodies. The larvicide listed above is made from bacteria that only affect mosquito larvae.  The bacteria kill the larvae before they can develop into biting adults.

2011 Aerial Larvicide Application Schedule

  • May 4, 2011
  • June 1, 2011
  • June 29, 2011
  • July 20, 2011
  • August 10, 2011
  • August 31, 2011
  • September 21, 2011

Please note, future aerial larvicide application dates depend on mosquito trap counts. If counts are high, larvicide will be applied every three weeks. If counts are moderate, larvicide will be applied every four weeks. If counts are low, larvicide will not be applied.
