Why Planning Is Important / What we do:

Land Use planning, the process of accommodating growth while protecting our quality of life andpreserving nature, is a key responsibility of local governments. The Department of Planning and Land Use, one of six departments that make up the County's Land Use and Environment Group, is a key part of the Land Use Planning process in the unincorporated county. We help create and maintain the general plan, which sets the philosophy and policies that determine how our communities will grow while protecting the land uses those communities value. We maintain and improve the zoning ordinance that protects the public health and welfare. We advise the Board of Supervisors and San Diego County Planning Commission on land use projects that are brought to us for review. We preserve the environment through our Multiple Species Conservation Program and ensure that development complies with California environmental law. We help homeowners and builders get the building permits they need and we protect our communities' quality of life through our Code Enforcement Division.
