Woodside Avenue Water Quality Basin: Outreach

Outreach Efforts Help Increase Community Awareness for Water Quality

As a component of the project, efforts are being made to help spread community awareness of water quality throughout the San Diego River Watershed. This includes information on how pollutants enter the waterways, how pollution prevention efforts can help reduce the amount of pollutants from the source, and how cleanup efforts and projects such as this one can remove pollutants within storm water runoff.

An information kiosk was included on-site that summarizes the purpose of the project, how it was funded through a state grant, and how pollutants will be prevented from entering San Diego River as a result of the project. Pedestrians traveling along Woodside Avenue will have the opportunity to become more familiar with this project and learn more about its purpose.

Outreach from within the community has involved volunteer groups who have come to the site to remove accumulated trash, debris, and recyclables that would have otherwise entered the San Diego River without their efforts and the construction of the water quality basin. Awareness has also been spread at local events such as the Lakeside Fire Department Annual Open House, where a variety of project specific information and general water quality information was on display. A brochure containing much of this information was handed out at this event, and continues to be made available at other local events as well.
