ENERGY ALERT AND REQUEST FOR ACTION HELP AVOID POWER EMERGENCIES

The California’s Independent Service Operator (Cal-ISO) has issued a statewide alert to conserve power through the end of this week.

AT WORK:
Board of Supervisors Policy G-15, Section 1.C, requires compliance with the 68 degree heating and 78 degree cooling ranges to promote energy conservation and efficiency within County buildings. The following is a list of action items to reduce electrical energy consumption at County buildings and help avoid power emergencies:

1.  Maintain building temperatures at 78 degrees during the summer months.
2.  Close doors to unused rooms.
3.  Advise building clients to turn off (when practical) all printers, copiers
and other office equipment after working hours.
4.  Turn off unnecessary lights, computers and appliances during normal working
hours. Reduce the number of faxes, copiers and printers left on by consolidating
use of these office machines in one or two work areas.
5.  Conserve water as much as possible. Water pumping constitutes a significant
demand for electricity during the summer months.

Additionally, please pass along the following tips to all Facility Operations employees and building clients and ask them to do their part to avoid power emergencies.

AT HOME:
1.  Use fans instead of air conditioning when possible, but if you use AC, set the
    thermostat to 78 degrees.
2.  Put off using major appliances until after 7 p.m.
3.  Close drapes and blinds in the morning to prevent warming from the sun.
4.  Conserve water.
