November 18, 2011

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Rancho San Diego Station on Friday, November 18th. Sheriff Bill Gore, Supervisor Dianne Jacob led the ceremony.

The new Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station is a 27,000 square foot station on approximately 5 acres of a 14.8 acre County-owned site. It is located on Campo Road near the intersection of Highways 54 and 94.

It has one story of operational space, including patrol operations, office space, and support facilities with parking beneath the building. The facility will open with approximately 90-100 staff moving from the Lemon Grove Sheriff's Station to a more strategic and accessible location within the unincorporated County.

The new Station will serve the communities of Rancho San Diego, Spring Valley, La Presa, Jamul, Casa de Oro, Mt. Helix, and unincorporated areas within La Mesa and El Cajon. The Lemon Grove Station will remain with a smaller contingent of staff contracted to serve the City.

The new building incorporates sustainable features; and the Design Build team is targeting LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Green building features include recycled building materials, natural day lighting, energy efficient mechanical systems, low water use landscaping with drought tolerant and indigenous plants, and bio-swales for storm water management.  Through a competitive process, the County selected T.B. Penick and Sons, Inc., in association with Jeff Katz Architecture, as the Design Build team for the project.

The overall project budget, including land acquisition, planning, design, and construction, is $17.5 million.

Grading and infrastructure work to begin on the site in late November 2011. Building construction anticipated to begin in the spring of 2012, with occupancy expected in the Summer of 2013.
