Facilities where this Service is offered:
Edgemoor has a maximum bed capacity of 192, with a high daily occupancy rate. Edgemoor is the largest employer in Santee with 350 staff members. Patients range in age from 19 to 90 years, with most between the ages of 35 and 55. Permanently and often terminally ill, Edgemoor patients typically have a life expectancy subsequent to admittance of 20 to 30 years filled with intense physical, mental and emotional challenges.
The average patient's age is 45-55, compared to an average age of 82 in skilled nursing facilities nationwide. All Edgemoor patients are physically, financially, socially, and psychologically dependent on the full scope of health programs and services delivered at the facility, including nursing care, external (tube) feedings, wound care, rehabilitation services, mental health assessments and recreation therapy. Medi-Cal and Medicare reimburse the County for 97% of Edgemoor patient care; private insurance provides payment for the remainder.
Primary diagnoses at admittance among Edgemoor's patients include:
- Dementia arising from Alzheimer's disease, cerebral palsy, alcohol and substance abuse, and vascular problems (18%)
- Traumatic brain injuries (15%)
- Huntington's Disease (14%)
- Cerebral vascular accidents (7%)
- Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (5%)
Many patients also suffer from the compounded effects of as many as thirteen secondary diagnoses, making their care very complex, challenging and extensive. For example, 43% of Edgemoor patients have restricted joint motion, compared to an average of 25% of patients in U.S. nursing homes overall. Restricted joint motion arises because of inactivity due to disease, deformity, pain, muscle weakness, paralysis, or sever disability; it interferes with eating, walking, dressing and other aspects of self-care, requiring significant assistance and therapy to maintain the remaining joint motion and compensate for the lack thereof.
