Purpose
The Black Infant Health (BIH) program provides services to African-American pregnant and postpartum women with infants up to 3 months of age. The BIH program works to ensure that African-American babies are born healthy and have the opportunity to grow into healthy children.
Goals of the program
- Empower women, build resilience and reduce stress
- Promote healthy behaviors to support health, wellness and relationships
- Promote healthy relationships and enhance bonding and parenting skills
- Connect women with medical, social, economic and mental health services
- Engage communities to raise community awareness and mobilize community action to support BIH efforts and improve conditions for African-American women and their families
About the Black Infant Health program
County’s BIH contractor, Family Health Centers of San Diego, provides direct BIH services in specific zip codes in San Diego County. Pregnant and parenting African-American women benefit from the program by becoming empowered to make positive choices in their life, not only for themselves, but for their families and communities.
BIH services include:
- Prenatal and postpartum classes
- Assistance with Medi-Cal, Access for Infants and Mothers (AIM), and Healthy Families applications
- Help in finding prenatal and well child care
- Case management, social support, and health education
- Referrals for emergency food, clothing, housing and more
- Referrals to Public Health Nursing and other resources for pregnant women
Eligibility
- Pregnant African-American women
- African-American women with a new baby (0-3 months of age)
